Terry Fox: A Legacy of Hope

Terry Fox is a Canadian hero.

He was an active teen from British Columbia diagnosed with bone cancer. While Terry was getting treatment after having his leg amputated, he was moved by the suffering of other young cancer patients in the hospital. This inspired him to start the Marathon of Hope. The goal was to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research.

It took cancer to realize that being self-centered is not the way to live. The answer is to try and help others. — Terry Fox

His journey reminds us to act with passion.

Terry dipped his foot in the Atlantic Ocean on April 12, 1980. He covered about 42 kilometres a day for 143 days–a total of  5,373 km! Although he was unable to finish the course across Canada, he gained the attention of a nation. The spirit of this young Canadian perseveres to one day outrun cancer.

Even if I don’t finish, we need others to continue. It’s got to keep going without me. — Terry Fox

Thursday, September 22 is Gonzaga’s School Run for the Terry Fox Foundation.  Students are encouraged to take part in honour of someone affected by cancer.

Who will you run for?
